When Streetball got more popular in the 90s, sports brands fully realized it’s potential. So they created a new market for Streetball gear and sneakers. Untill then Streetball players had worn regular basketball sneakers made for indoor use but those kicks would wear down quickly on the blacktop. Therefore in 1993 Converse, a brand that was big in basketball at that time, released the Converse Tar Max. This sneaker was built like a tank and it’s special outsole was supposed to provide perfect traction on concrete courts.
Larry «Grandma» Johnson used to promote the Tar Max and I love this sneaker because it’s a great example for what Streetball sneakers were all about in the 90s.
